Teens go to pubs for meals without mentioning what they drink. Strong language includes "d-k," "c-k," and "f-k." Adults drink alcohol a few times but not to excess. The only injury is some minor cuts from broken glass. The violence is fairly mild and in the fantasy realm, with a couple of magical attacks, kidnapping, and a vampire drinking the blood of small animals. Sex is briefly paired with violence by mentioning excessive biting and by mentioning blood on and in mouths after kissing. Masturbating and oral sex in the past are mentioned with crude language but not narrated. There are descriptions of rubbing a penis on the partner's hip through clothing and naked, having orgasms against each other, kissing, and biting. Sexy stuff is more intense in this installment, with a couple of descriptions of sex using crude language like "c-k" and powerful emotions described. Reading the trilogy in order is highly recommended for a thorough understanding of the characters and events. Parents need to know that Any Way the Wind Blows is the final installment in the fantasy Simon Snow Trilogy by popular YA author Rainbow Rowell. The Last Thing He Told Me is a mystery-thriller novel by Laura Dave, published by Simon & Schuster. Thus it has constantly attempted to control women’s bodies, women’s sexuality and women’s reproductive function. In the book I argue that this war against women was rooted in two aspects of capitalism that have remained a structural feature of the capitalist system to our day.įirst, capitalism began with a historically unprecedented drive to accumulate labor power and, throughout every phase of its development, it has continued to expand the exploitable work force. This war was conducted primarily through the witch-hunts that took place in Europe and America, especially in Peru, leading to the torture and execution of hundreds of thousands of women and to the definition of women as inferior beings: savage, cannibalistic and demonic. Caliban and the Witch is a history of the development of capitalism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries analyzed from the viewpoint of its impact on women and the reproduction of the work force which in capitalist society becomes “women’s labor.” It shows that war and enslavement were fundamental conditions of capitalist development (as they continue to be) and, most important, that capitalist development required and began with a war against women. But silence, the poet knows, is also a violence it is complacency masquerading as bravery, self-created deafness against the suffering of the vulnerable. It is a language, hidden so it wouldn’t die a way to communicate grief, defiance, and solidarity in the aftermath of a trauma so deep it scours all sounds. In these poems, Kaminsky imagines silence as a strategy, an act not of subservience but of insurgency. As a result, the whole town goes deaf in protest, as if silence is the only language left to explain the extent of their annihilation. The little boy's crime is to spit at an army sergeant who has arrived to break up a public gathering in a time of martial law. Within the drama, set in a fictional town called Vasenka, a deaf child named Petya is murdered by a soldier while attending a puppet show. The poems here are presented as a play in two acts, including a list of “Dramatis Personae” at the beginning. It took me a long moment before I came back to myself.ĭeaf Republic is unlike any poetry collection I've ever read. I emerged from this poetry collection utterly dazed, as if torn out of a dream.
